Vegan sensitive toothpaste in the UK: what vegan means on a toothpaste, and the options.
Almost every sensitivity toothpaste sold in the UK is vegan by formula, and the ingredient list on the back of the tube is not what settles it. Of the forty-nine sensitivity pastes whose published lists were read for the September 2026 category review, four name an ingredient of animal origin — three of them milk proteins, one an insect colour — and forty-five name none that this page went looking for; but forty-five of the forty-nine also contain glycerin, whose name on an ingredient list is identical whether it was made from rapeseed oil or from beef tallow. S3 Sensitivity Science™ states on its own product page that it is vegan and cruelty-free, and this page is about how a reader would go about testing a statement like that.

- Four of the forty-nine published lists carry an ingredient of animal origin by name: lactoferrin in a Bioniq paste, lactoperoxidase in a Curaprox paste, carmine in a Hismile serum, and lysozyme, colostrum, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase together in Zendium Sensitive.
- One brand of the forty-nine simply says so: the Curaprox page prints "Not suitable for Vegans" as a line of its own, directly beneath the ingredient list.
- Glycerin is in forty-five of the forty-nine lists and no list states where it came from, because the naming rules do not ask for that; three brands volunteer it anyway, one marking "Glycerin (Vegan)" inside its own list and one writing "vegetable glycerin".
- Hydroxyapatite is the newest active on this shelf and it does exist in a bone-derived form, so the question is fair; the supplier technical file for S3's nano-hydroxyapatite describes it as "synthetic and inorganic hydroxyapatite in water", and the document covering S3's second hydroxyapatite is a scan whose text cannot be read, so this page does not state a route for that one.

What does "vegan" mean on a toothpaste, and who decides?
Nobody official. A toothpaste is a cosmetic product in Great Britain, alongside shampoo, deodorant and soap, and the rules that govern it are about safety and labelling1. Those rules require the pack to carry a list of ingredients, and they say what that list is for: it lets people with known allergies check the contents1. They set no definition of "vegan" and no restriction on who may print the word, and nothing in the product information file a brand must keep behind the tube — the safety assessment, the manufacturing record, the evidence for the product's effects, the ingredients with their concentrations and toxicological properties — is required to record where a raw material came from2. So "vegan" on a toothpaste is a marketing claim like any other: the brand has to be able to back it up if challenged, and until it is challenged, the only person who has checked it is the brand.
Three kinds of third-party scheme fill that gap, and they are not equivalent. The Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark and the Vegetarian Society's vegan approval both audit the formula and the supply chain against the scheme's own criteria, and both charge a licence fee for the logo. Leaping Bunny certifies the absence of animal testing, which is a separate question from whether the formula contains anything animal-derived. PETA's list is a self-declaration the company signs. Each scheme sets and publishes its own criteria, and none of them is a public register you can look a product up in, so a logo points at somebody else's rules; it is not itself an answer.
What survives all of that is small and useful: on the pastes read for this page, exactly one names a certifying body for its vegan claim. Waken's page says the paste is "approved as vegan by the Vegetarian Society". Georganics names a certification too, but the one it names is COSMOS Natural, an organic and natural-cosmetics standard rather than a vegan scheme, printed alongside its own unaudited "100% Vegan & Cruelty-Free". Everybody else is asserting it in their own voice: Ordo's page says "it is vegan, cruelty-free, SLS-free" and names nobody who checked it, and S3 does the same. Those three claims travel together on a great many packs while having almost nothing to do with each other, and the third of them — what leaving out sodium lauryl sulfate does and does not achieve — belongs to the sibling page on SLS-free pastes rather than to this one.
Which ingredients in a toothpaste can come from animals?
Fewer than the internet suggests, and not the ones most lists warn about. Toothpaste is mostly water, a humectant, an abrasive, a surfactant, a thickener, a flavour and one or two actives, and for every one of those jobs the plant or mineral material is the cheap, shelf-stable option a formulator reaches for by default. The genuinely animal-derived ingredients that turn up in oral care are a short list of milk proteins and enzymes used as antibacterials, one insect-derived red colour, and a handful of fats and waxes that belong in lip balm, not in a toothpaste.
The table below is what this page searched for, and the last column is what the search found across all forty-nine published lists. Reading it the other way round is the point: a reader worried about bone char, beeswax or honey in a toothpaste can stop worrying about this shelf, and start worrying about glycerin instead.

Two entries on that table are there to be crossed off rather than worried about. Xylitol, which turns up in thirteen of the lists including S3's, is a plant sugar alcohol from birch or corn and is carried for its prebiotic effect; it gets asked about only because the name sounds industrial. Stearic acid, the classic ambiguous-origin ingredient in cosmetics, appears in no list on this shelf at all — and if it did, its name would tell a reader nothing, which is the same problem as glycerin.
Which UK sensitivity toothpastes actually carry one?
Four of the forty-nine, and the four are worth naming precisely because the count is so low. Zendium Sensitive carries the largest set: its published list names lysozyme, colostrum, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase, a group of milk and egg proteins the brand builds its saliva-support story around. Curaprox's Enzycal 1450, listed by the brand under sensitive teeth, carries lactoperoxidase alongside two other enzymes. Bioniq Repair Toothpaste Plus carries lactoferrin, which is the single difference between it and the plain Bioniq paste in the same range. And Hismile's Tooth Armour serum carries carmine, listed as CI 75470, the red made from cochineal insects.
One of those four brands tells you itself. The Curaprox UK page prints "Not suitable for Vegans" as a line of its own, immediately under the ingredient list, which is the most useful sentence any brand on this shelf has written for a vegan reader. The other three publish no vegan statement on the pages read for this page, and two of them publish pages that a plain fetch cannot read at all, so nothing is said here about their own positions: the fact recorded is what the ingredient list carries, which is a fact about the ingredient and not a verdict on the brand.

Where this table is weakest is worth saying plainly. Five products in the review publish no ingredient list that could be read — the Pärla tabs, two hydroxyapatite brands and two supermarket own labels — so five sensitivity products on the UK market cannot be checked this way at all. A row like Pärla's is a brand statement and nothing more — the words "Zero animal cruelty" and "Vegan" are on its page, the formula behind them is not. One further row carries only part of its list: the recorded string ends with a note that the published list continues past the passage that was captured, so "none found" on that row means less than it does elsewhere.
Why is glycerin the ingredient nobody can check?
Because the naming system on the back of a tube names molecules, not their feedstocks. Glycerin is the same three-carbon alcohol whether it was split out of rapeseed oil, palm oil, coconut oil or beef tallow, so the list says "Glycerin" in all four cases; and glycerin appears in forty-five of the forty-nine lists in this review, usually first or second, which means it is the bulk of most tubes. Tallow glycerin is a real product with a real market — it is a by-product of meat rendering and it is cheap — so this is not a theoretical worry, merely an unanswerable one from the pack. The same trap catches a few smaller ingredients on the same shelf: allantoin in two lists can come from comfrey root or from uric acid, the arginine in one Colgate paste can be fermented or extracted, and the sorbitan ester in the Euthymol paste is built on a fatty acid whose feedstock the name does not reveal.
Three brands on this shelf answer the question before it is asked, and that behaviour is the thing to reward. Nura writes the answer inside its own ingredient list, as "Glycerin (Vegan)". Davids goes further and annotates its whole list in plain English — "calcium carbonate (limestone abrasive), vegetable glycerin, purified water, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), xylitol (birch derived)" — which is the only list in the review that names the source of its glycerin. Waken sends the reader to a body that has audited the supply chain rather than to its own word.
For everybody else, and that includes S3, one question does get an answer, and it has to be put to the brand directly: is the glycerin in this product of vegetable or of animal origin, and will you say so in writing? A brand that cannot answer that about its largest ingredient has not checked its own vegan claim; a brand that answers it in a sentence has. That question is worth more than any logo on the front of a pack.
Where does hydroxyapatite come from, and can it come from bone?
It can, and on this shelf it is the ingredient where the question actually bites. Hydroxyapatite is the mineral that makes up most of tooth enamel, and it is made industrially by two quite different routes: wet synthesis from calcium and phosphate salts, and calcination of biological material, which in practice means animal bone or fish scale. Seventeen of the forty-nine lists in this review carry hydroxyapatite in some form, more than carry any other repair active, and none of the seventeen states which route its material came from. "Biomimetic" and "nano" describe the crystal — its chemistry, its carbonate content, its size — and say nothing about where the calcium started.
For S3 the answer is partly in the supplier's paperwork and partly missing, and both halves belong on the page. The cosmetic ingredient technical file for the nano-hydroxyapatite S3 buys describes the material in its composition section as "synthetic and inorganic hydroxyapatite in water", traces its trace impurities to "the reactants used in the manufacture of the product", and diagrams a production process that starts with purified water; the same file states that the ingredient "has not been subject to any animal testing by or on behalf of" its maker. That is a supplier document rather than an independent one, and it is quoted here as what the supplier states. The second hydroxyapatite in the tube is a different story: the technical profile for it in S3's own evidence folder is a scanned document with no readable text, so no route is established for it and this page will not guess one. A reader who wants that answer should ask S3 for it, and so should S3.
Is S3 vegan, and how would you check that yourself?
S3 states it, in two places on its own product page, and states no certifier. Its published list carries no ingredient from the animal-derived column of the table above, and it is one of the forty-five lists in the review where nothing was found. On the two questions this page says a reader should actually ask, S3 comes out mixed: the hydroxyapatite question is answered for one of its two hydroxyapatites and open for the other, and the glycerin question — glycerin is the first ingredient on S3's list — is not answered anywhere on its page.
So the honest instruction is the same one this page gives for every other brand. Read the list for the named animal-derived ingredients; assume the ambiguous ones are unanswered; then email the brand about glycerin and, for a hydroxyapatite paste, about the origin of its hydroxyapatite. Of the forty-nine sensitivity toothpastes on sale in the UK in September 2026, one published list pairs potassium nitrate with hydroxyapatite and a fluoride salt, and it belongs to S3; all forty-nine lists, each with its source and the date it was read, sit on the category review page, which is where to test that rather than take it. On the glycerin question S3 has not yet done what this page asks of everyone else, and saying so is cheaper than pretending otherwise.
What does "cruelty-free" add on a toothpaste sold in the UK?
Very little, and this is the part that costs S3 one of its own selling lines. Animal testing is banned for cosmetic products in this country — the government said so again in November 2025, in the announcement of its roadmap for replacing animal testing, where the ban is described as the reason cosmetics companies stand to gain from better non-animal methods3. A toothpaste is a cosmetic product1. So "cruelty-free" is close to meaningless as a difference between toothpastes sold in the UK: S3 can say it, and so can nearly every product on this page.
Two things the phrase still tells you. It says something about a company that also sells outside the UK, in markets where testing is required or permitted, because a global brand's cruelty-free claim is a claim about all of its markets and not just this one. And it tells you which schemes a brand has bothered to join, since the testing-focused certifications audit a supply chain that a UK ban does not reach — the ingredient level, the contract laboratory, the parent company. Pärla's page claims both and answers a direct question about the second of them: "Is PÄRLA cruelty free? Yes none of our ingredients are tested on animals."
The advertising regulator has not had to rule on any of this. Searched on 2026-09-10, the ASA's rulings register returns twenty-four rulings for "vegan" and one for "cruelty free"; the twenty listed on the first page cover food, drink and supplements, two campaigning charities, an influencer's undisclosed ads, a car, an electric toothbrush and a deodorant, and not one of them turns on whether a vegan or cruelty-free claim about a cosmetic was substantiated4. The site's pagination did not advance on a plain fetch, so four of the twenty-four were not read; on the twenty that were, no ASA ruling in the register concerns a vegan claim on a toothpaste as at 2026-09-104.
Does choosing a vegan paste cost you anything on sensitivity?
No, and the reason is chemistry, not ethics: the actives that work on sensitive teeth are minerals and salts, and none of them is an animal material. Potassium nitrate is a salt. Sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate are salts. Stannous fluoride and the bioactive glasses are made in a furnace. Hydroxyapatite is the one active with an animal route available, and the evidence for it does not distinguish between routes, because the trials tested products rather than feedstocks: a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of forty-four clinical trials, whose authors include scientists employed by Dr Wolff, a maker of hydroxyapatite toothpastes, pooled every form and format of hydroxyapatite together and reported a 39.5% reduction in dentine hypersensitivity against placebo5. An independent 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis of six four-week randomised trials found nano-hydroxyapatite relieved sensitivity better than its comparators on evaporative and tactile testing, and no better on cold6. Neither review separates a synthetic crystal from a calcined one, so nothing in the published evidence suggests a vegan reader is choosing a weaker paste.
What a vegan reader can lose is fluoride, and that has nothing to do with being vegan. Several of the pastes with the most prominent vegan labelling on this shelf are also fluoride-free, because the brands that market on natural credentials tend to drop fluoride as well. Those are separate decisions and should be made separately. S3 keeps full adult-strength fluoride, 1450 ppm as sodium monofluorophosphate, beside its two hydroxyapatites. What should you look for on the pack, and what should you ask?
Five words on the list, then one email. The words that matter are the milk proteins — lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, colostrum — and carmine or CI 75470 for the colour; on this shelf those five names account for every animal-derived ingredient found across forty-nine products. If none of them is there, the list has told you everything it is capable of telling you. Then send the email: ask whether the glycerin is of vegetable origin, and, if the paste contains hydroxyapatite, whether the hydroxyapatite is synthetic or of biological origin. A brand that answers both in writing has done the work; a brand that answers neither has printed a word on a box. If you would rather not have to ask, buy a paste whose vegan claim an outside scheme has audited, and accept how narrow that makes the choice: on this shelf it is one paste, Waken's.
One last thing about brushing, unrelated to any of this: a tooth that has started hurting on its own, without a cold drink or a cold wind to set it off, or that hurts in one spot and keeps hurting, is not a toothpaste problem. That is a dentist appointment, whatever is on the ingredient list.

Is S3's hydroxyapatite made from bone?
The nano-hydroxyapatite is not, on the supplier's own account: its cosmetic ingredient technical file describes the material as "synthetic and inorganic hydroxyapatite in water" and attributes its trace impurities to the reactants used in manufacture. That is a supplier statement, quoted as such, and no independent document in S3's evidence folder corroborates it. For the second hydroxyapatite in the tube, the biomimetic one, the honest answer is that it is not established: the technical profile for that ingredient is a scanned file whose text cannot be read, so nobody writing this page can say which route made it. Neither S3's product page nor any competitor's page in this review states the origin of its hydroxyapatite, so a reader who wants that answer has to ask for it.
Is fluoride vegan?
Yes. The fluoride salts used in toothpaste — sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, stannous fluoride — are mineral salts made from fluorspar, with no animal step anywhere in the process, and the same is true of potassium nitrate and of the bioactive glasses. Dropping fluoride is a decision about decay, not about animals, and the two get bundled together only because the same brands often make both at once.
Does a vegan toothpaste clean or protect any differently?
Not for any reason connected to being vegan. Cleaning is done by an abrasive — hydrated silica or calcium carbonate, both minerals — and protection by the actives, which are salts and minerals too. The one place the question has any purchase is hydroxyapatite, where a synthetic crystal and a bone-derived one are genuinely different materials, and the clinical literature does not separate them: the 2023 hydroxyapatite meta-analysis, whose authors include a manufacturer's own scientists, pooled all forms and formats together, so its 39.5% figure against placebo belongs to the family and not to any route or any single product5.
What is the difference between vegan and cruelty-free on a UK pack?
Vegan is about what is in the tube; cruelty-free is about what was done to test it. On a cosmetic sold in the UK the second is close to automatic, because animal testing for cosmetic products is banned here3, which is why nearly every paste on this shelf can print it and why it separates almost nothing. Vegan still separates products — four of the forty-nine lists in this review carry an animal-derived ingredient — but the word on the pack is the brand's own assurance unless a scheme is named beside it.
If the list looks fine, can I assume the paste is vegan?
You can assume that nothing obviously animal-derived is declared, which is not the same thing. Forty-five of the forty-nine lists contain glycerin and none of them says whether it came from a plant or from tallow, because the labelling rules ask for the ingredient's name and not its source1. If it matters to you, treat a clean list as a pass on the first test and ask the brand about glycerin as the second; if a brand has audited certification, that is the scheme's answer to the same question, arrived at through the supply chain rather than through the pack.
